CORPIQ gets a favourable outcome after an unrelenting fight

News

After having criticized the Régie du logement for nearly 25 years for publishing unrealistic rent-increase simulations, after lodging an appeal with the Superior Court of Québec in 2006 to change the practice, then addressing the Court of Appeal in 2007—all in vain—CORPIQ is finally getting what it has been calling for. The Régie du logement has, for the first time since the mid-1990s, published a press release presenting only the new rent-fixing criteria, without including the fictitious rent adjustments based on heating type. These scenarios misled tenants and owners, thus distorting their negotiations. Tenants used this disinformation to unjustly refuse the rent-increase notice—in some cases for minimal amounts—which led to pointless conflicts when renewing the lease.
