Unveiling of the Aviseo study on the rental housing sector in Quebec
Info CORPIQ (video)
This week, I am going to discuss with you a document that will be made public, it is a major study conducted by the firm Aviseo.
English subtitles are available in the settings of the video on YouTube. Don't forget to also turn on the "Subtitles/closed captions" option.
This firm of economists from Quebec received a mandate from CORPIQ during the last year, to carry out a study on the entire rental housing sector. For one year, the firm Aviseo has had the mandate to constitute a retrospective, but also a situation report of the rental sector and thus of the Quebec rental market.
On Tuesday, May 9, 2023, there will be a conference in Montreal to make the results of the study public, so the media will also be able to read this document which was financed and supported by the Société d'habitation du Québec. As you know, there are 1.5 million dwellings and households in Quebec. It is a portrait of the current situation that is important, and, without surprise, this study will reveal that the rental market is under pressure and that multiple actions will be necessary. First, it will be necessary to increase supply because there is an imbalance in the current rental market, but above all, it will be necessary to protect the existing rental stock through actions and measures by governments and the various administrations.
The study that is about to be released had three main objectives:
- To develop a factual base on the rental market.
- Identify key issues and
- Propose solutions (24 will be presented)
Furthermore, it should be noted that the May 9th event is already sold out, with over 180 participants expected. They will attend presentations that will represent all points of view of the housing sector, including partners from the construction industry. These different panelists will set the table for meaningful discussions.
It is also appropriate to underline all the work of the CORPIQ team which for months has been striving to make this project a reality and to ensure that it reflects the issues and needs of the rental sector as well as possible. On the part of Aviseo Conseil, we would like to thank the economist Jean-Pierre Lessard, his colleague Andrée-Ann Gosselin and their entire team who worked on this project over the past year. I would also like to thank you, who have been consulted in the past months and years on this subject. Moreover, the reading committee was made up of a former president of the Régie du logement, the very first one to have been, Mr. Claude Chapdelaine, but also of a university professor Mario Polèse.
So, this is really a high-quality document that I invite you to take possession of as of May 9 when it will be made available. I also invite you to contribute to the dialogue and reflections and I thank you in advance for participating as usual. I think we are at a crossroads in the rental housing sector. A certain number of adjustments are necessary and CORPIQ will rely on this report to continue to make representations and to ensure that it carries the message of all Quebec landlords.
