A survey among tenants shows that 87% feel they have a good relationship with their landlord

Montreal, January 10, 2023 - The Corporation des propriétaires immobiliers du Québec (CORPIQ) has released the results of a tenant survey revealing that 87% of tenants in Quebec feel they have a good or very good relationship with their landlord. A satisfactory result that demonstrates the daily efforts of the 250,000 rental landlords to offer the best possible environment for housing Quebec households.

High satisfaction of tenants with landlords

The survey was conducted by the independent firm L’Observateur, through telephone and web interviews with representative samples between June and September 2022. To the question "Would you say your relationship with your landlord is very good (47%), somewhat good (40%), somewhat bad (9%) or very bad (3%)", respondents significantly indicated that they have a favorable opinion of rental landlords. "Being a landlord or manager of a housing stock is demanding in 2023 and requires a diverse skillset to adapt to the different realities of tenants in Quebec. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has put more pressure on landlords who have had to be flexible in order to mitigate the collateral effects of this situation on the social level. Landlords are often the first to call on community and police services. Our members have a front row seat to a rapidly changing social context. CORPIQ joins its voice to reinforce social resources and support the most vulnerable clients. Finally, our association takes advantage of the beginning of the year 2023 to salute the work of all rental landlords in Quebec who redouble their efforts on a daily basis to ensure the best housing conditions",indicated Mr. Marc-André Plante, Director, Public Affairs and Government Relations of CORPIQ.

 

Unsanitary conditions and management of the rental stock: challenges for everyone!

In the same survey, 92% of tenants indicated that they had not had any problems with unsanitary conditions in the past year. Only 6% of tenants indicated that they had experienced unsanitary conditions in the past year. On a scale of 1 to 10, tenants rate the condition of their housing at 7.95 and the stewardship of their landlord at 7.52.  "Nearly 60% of the rental stock in Quebec was built before 1980. There is a need to invest in the renovation of the Quebec rental stock. The rules and conditions of the rental market must be revised to encourage investment in the maintenance of housing. Obviously, the results of the survey only reveal the perception of the tenants who favorably underline the rigorous maintenance work of the rental owners. However, CORPIQ notes the importance of investing more in the renovation of the aging rental housing stock while the financial conditions have deteriorated particularly in the last year. Governments will have to provide more support to rental landlords, notably through programs to stimulate energy efficiency renovations and a rent calculation formula that better recognizes capital investments. The situation is good, but could deteriorate rapidly in the absence of government support", said Mr. Plante.
