In a recent article in the newspaper Le Devoir, we learned that more than 135 Quebec municipalities have implemented a two-tiered tax rate between plexes and buildings of 6 units or more.

As the law allows, municipalities can determine a higher rate up to 33% for buildings of 6 units and more. A situation that has an impact on landlord’s tax bill who will then have the odious task of passing on this increase to their tenants in accordance with the method of setting rents in Quebec. A situation denounced by CORPIQ, notably in its September 2022 brief proposing 32 solutions to the housing crisis. Finally, let's point out that some cities even created a transfer tax of up to $5,000 for all newly built dwellings. This tax will have an immediate effect on the price of rents.
