Only a few weeks left to exercise a repossession of housing

Owners wishing to take over a dwelling by July 1, 2021 have only a few weeks left to send their notice of repossession. They have up to 6 months before the expiry of the one-year lease to notify their tenant, i.e. December 31, 2020 for leases ending June 30, 2021.

CORPIQ reminds landlords that since 2016, it is no longer possible to repossess a dwelling occupied by a tenant who meets all three of the following criteria: aged 70 years or more, who has lived in the dwelling for more than 10 years and who has a low income. CORPIQ is of the opinion that the government, by allowing the adoption of this private bill, has itself created a form of discrimination against seniors. Indeed, according to a survey conducted by CORPIQ in 2017, one out of two landlords would now hesitate to rent a dwelling to a person of this age or approaching this age. This landlord would no longer be able to take over the dwelling to house a family member.

In closing, it should be remembered that the request for repossession must be justified by the reasons provided for by law and that it does not aim at another objective, such as re-renting at a higher rent.
