At the National Assembly members debated, a motion presented by Québec solidaire to be introduced by June 2020, an emergency bill to deal with the current housing crisis in Quebec.
Québec solidaire called for a moratorium on tenant evictions in areas where the vacancy rate for rental units is less than 3% and proposed that a maximum rate [of rent increase] be put in place.
During the vote on the motion, the members from Québec solidaire, the Parti Québécois and the independent member for Marie-Victorin all voted in favour of it. However, it was defeated because the government and the Liberal members voted against it.
It should be remembered that evictions are allowed for three reasons: to subdivide the dwelling, enlarge it substantially or change its destination. In addition, there is the right to repossess a dwelling so that the landlord and his or her family can live there.
