MP replies to objections from a member of Parliament from Québec Solidaire In a heated exchange at the National Assembly on December 5, MP Andrés Fontecilla, from Québec Solidaire, asked Housing Minister Andrée Laforest to waive the legalization of security deposits. The Minister replied that she was not yet ready to legalize a deposit and that she was continuing her consultations and analyze the impact.

The deputy of Laurier-Dorion also described the security deposit as being nothing more than a " deterrent fee when entering a new dwelling", accusing CORPIQ, without naming it, of propaganda by highlighting extreme cases of ransacked dwellings.

Nonetheless, Andrés Fontecilla made the minister react by stating that the security deposit fuelled the prejudice that tenants are poor people and that poor people are unable to take care of their housing.

He also raised the spectre of an explosion in judicial delays that would cancel out the benefits of Bill 16 reforming the Régie du logement, because number of tenants would have to go to court to recover their deposits.

CORPIQ had asked for a meeting with the member of Québec Solidaire a few months ago, but Andrés Fontecilla's office did not  reply.
