In the election campaign, the left-wing Quebec Solidaire party reiterated its desire to tighten control over rents in Quebec, notably by introducing a lease register to permit tenants, even for commercial leases, to contest the new rent based on what the previous tenant was paying.

This political party also wants a national housing policy that would prioritize the construction of 50,000 social housing units in 5 years.

With respect to delays at the Régie du logement, Québec solidaire would like the cases brought by the tenants to be heard more quickly.

Finally, the party suggests that municipalities have the power to issue "vacancy certificates" to fight real estate and property speculation.

In 2016, Québec solidaire managed to convince the Liberal government to support the passage of its private bill 492, in order to restrict the right of repossession of a home by its owner if the tenant is 70 years old or more.
