Hydro-Québec wants to give discounts to energy-saving customers
News
The public utility is looking to raise its rates by 0.8% on April 1, 2019, for all residential customers and most business customers. It is also proposing a rate cut for customers who save energy during the cold months. The Régie de l’énergie will make its decision on the proposed rate changes by March 2019.
Hydro-Québec explains that the rate-hike request is due to higher costs for purchasing electricity and investments into its high-voltage transmission system.
Further, as of December 2019, a new rate option may be offered to customers during peak periods. Customers who voluntarily reduce their electricity consumption during high-demand times in winter may receive a discount on their bill.
