Interruption of electricity after unsubscription
In 2015, after CORPIQ’s successful appeal before the Régie de l’énergie, Hydro-Québec reduced, from $361 to $50, the power reconnection fee it charges landlords who choose not to take over the electrical bill of a tenant who disconnects before the end of the lease.
Hydro-Québec even went one step further, proposing to abolish the reconnection fees and let landlords choose, before a tenant disconnects, whether the service should be maintained (at the landlord’s expense) or shut off. This proposal, which the CORPIQ considers a positive development, still needs backing from the Régie de l’énergie. However, the tenant would be disconnected the same day, which would do away with the landlord’s seven days of notice. That being said, the landlord would receive a notice of disconnection via email.
